Thanks to The Horse is Not Black blog for the questions!
What are your summer goals? Horse related: To do at least one horse show with DaVinci! Best case scenario is Dressage in the Rockies in August. Worst case is a schooling show. Fitness related: keep getting in shape and slimming down another 5-8 lbs. Doing this by 1x/week with personal trainer Annie Beth Fitness , 1x/week Barre class, and riding 3-4x/week.
Do you have any tips or tricks for fly control? My barn is doing fly predators so we'll see how that works! Otherwise I do the Fly Away Turtleneck sheet and a fly mask. For fly spray I haven't found one I absolutely love but hoping to find one with sunscreen in it to keep him from bleaching!
How often do you bathe your horse? Very rarely, I bathe before a show and maybe twice a year besides that. If he's really sweaty I will hose him off and if his feathers are muddy I will rinse those off as well. I may have to start bathing more because he loves to roll!
Do you have any upcoming travel plans? Equine related or otherwise? We have our big family vacation/reunion trip to Michigan late July and Cancun in October. I stay local for any horse shows.
What is your favorite way to beat the heat? I love the UV long sleeve sunshirts since I don't have to worry about sunscreen. And I have one of those cool vests, that you soak in water, that thing is the best when it's really hot.
Do you do anything to prevent your horse from sunbleaching? Keeping a fly sheet on him and since he is Friesian I want to keep him really black so I started him on the Smart Dark and Handsome smartpaks.
How hot is too hot for you to ride? Anything over 95 degrees, here in Colorado it's a very dry heat so humidity isn't a huge problem but it still gets well over 100 degrees some days and I chose to ride at night.
How important is sun protection for you riding or just in general? Very important, I always wear sun protection on my face of spf 30 and then I try and keep covered for the rest. The UV sunshirts are a miracle!
Have you ever gone swimming with your horse? Nope! Would love to but Colorado lacks a lot of lakes and there aren't any ponds nearby.
